Humanitarian crisis in Gaza
In October 2023, the Middle East conflict escalated. Since then, there has been an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Over two million people are in urgent need of help, including countless children.
Together with a partner organisation, Help provided emergency assistance to families from Gaza, supplying them with relief goods and psychological support, among other things.
How is Help providing support in Gaza?
Emergency assistance for families from Gaza
In cooperation with our partner organisation, we provided urgently needed emergency aid to people from Gaza. Most recently, we supported Palestinian families in Cairo who were able to flee the Gaza Strip. Our focus was on providing care for children and mothers.
We facilitated psychosocial support for Palestinian children to help them cope with and process their traumatic experiences. We provided relief supplies for babies to breastfeeding and pregnant women. We also supported our partner organisation in Cairo in providing Palestinian families with aid supplies such as hygiene items and legal, psychological and health care. Help supported the centre by financing aid supplies and personnel costs.
In the first year following the escalation of the Middle East conflict, we worked with local partners to distribute hot meals and food parcels to families in need in the Gaza Strip. In total, we were able to provide around 74,000 people with food. We also strengthened medical care in the Gaza Strip by bringing first aid kits and other medical supplies across the border.
+++ Currently, Help is unable to provide any assistance in the Gaza Strip. +++
What is the situation like in Gaza?
Famine in the Gaza Strip
After two months, the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip was broken in March. The situation on the ground remains catastrophic. The area is one of the most densely populated in the world. Over two million people live here in an area of 365 km². Since the escalation of the Middle East conflict in October 2023, over 61,000 people have died, according to the Gaza Strip health authorities.
9 out of 10 people in the Gaza Strip have been displaced at least once since then. 60% of homes have been destroyed and the electricity and water supply has collapsed. The majority of people have lost their homes and all their possessions. The psychological strain on the people is enormous: the loss of family members, friends and acquaintances as well as the repeated displacement leave deep scars. Around one million Palestinian children are traumatised and urgently need psychological help.
In addition, the entire population of Gaza is suffering from hunger as food supplies are running low. Healthcare is also suffering greatly from the effects of the Middle East conflict: hospitals are completely overloaded, numerous medical facilities were destroyed in attacks. There are not enough medicines and medical supplies.
Humanitarian aid is urgently needed, but is severely limited. According to the United Nations, 500 trucks of aid are needed every day to meet the basic needs of Gaza's population.
FAQ
The situation in the Gaza Strip is extremely difficult and stressful for children. The ongoing humanitarian crisis and escalating military conflicts have made the situation considerably worse. UNICEF describes Gaza as “the most dangerous place in the world for children”.
According to the UN, over 90% of Gaza's population is currently displaced, including many children. In cities such as Rafah, children live in overcrowded, improvised shelters in extremely poor conditions. Access to clean water, adequate food and medical care is severely restricted. Thousands of children suffer from malnutrition and disease, and many have no access to necessary medical treatment. Humanitarian aid is urgently needed.
The psychological and physical impact on the children is devastating. Many children are injured, traumatized or have chronic illnesses and disabilities. There is a lack of basic services such as education and psychosocial support, further worsening the long-term prospects for these children.
There are currently 2.1 million people living in the Gaza Strip. One million of them, around half, are children. 346,000 of them are children under the age of five.
According to the health authorities in the Gaza Strip, 62,895 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the escalation of the Middle East conflict, including 18,430 children. 158,927 people have been injured.

The Gaza Strip is currently the deadliest place in the world for humanitarian aid workers. Due to the ongoing conflict, there is a high risk of airstrikes, which severely jeopardises security. In 2024, more aid workers were killed than ever before. In the Palestinian territories alone, 185 people lost their lives during aid missions. In 2025, 156 aid workers had already been killed in the Palestinian territories by the end of July.
